Item No. 240
Commodore Perry opened up trade between Japan and the West in the 1850s, bringing the first influx of Japonism into the Western market. The new popularity of Japanese goods also led to a rapid growth in Western-made art featuring Japanese influences, particularly animal and floral motifs as well as the two-dimensional look of Japanese woodblock prints. This bangle, sterling silver with yellow and rose gold overlay, dates to 1870s Britain and is a fine example of the Japanese-inspired styles of the era.
